How to have a Household in Harmony

Listen to Podcast: Maintain Household Peace with Aromatherapy

The typical American household could hardly be characterized as a Mecca of peace and harmony. The average household is a crossroads of multi-directional activity. Family members all have busy schedules that often border on the frantic.  They frequently have scheduling overlaps which creates anything but a atmosphere of peace and harmony.

What Causes Family Stress? In a ‘normal’ household these days, both parents hold at least one full time job.  The children are involved in a multitude of activities in addition to attending school and struggling to get their homework done. Moms, dads and kids are all stressed. Dashing between dance lessons, ball games and after school activities takes its toll.  Unfortunately, this is normal. It’s not an unusual situation. It is the daily way of life for many families in the US and elsewhere for that matter.

Most families try to do what they can to reduce the stress that is so prevalent in modern busy households. Schedules are made. Cleaning and other bathroom assignments are handed out. Chores are assigned. All of these measures are designed in an attempt to keep the household run like a well-oiled and efficient machine.   But rather than that happening, many or our household runs like a banging, clanking machine in need of some serious repair. We are missing out on the harmony bliss we all want.

Nerves get tense, tempers flare, and harsh words are spoken more, siblings fight and the peaceful ideal of domestic tranquility is shattered. So what can be done to help improve the situation? The answer in a single word is aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is gaining a wider and wider acceptance as a tool to help provide emotional stability and return calmness to public places as well as private homes. Even top industry giants and fortune 500 companies are beginning to recognize the value of aromatherapy in the work place and in public facilities. If aromatherapy can help to maintain peace and harmony in a busy train station and office buildings, it can certainly play a positive role in promoting and restoring peace and harmony in a busy household.

Only recently has any serious scientific research been done to investigate the effects that aromas have on the brain. We are still in the infancy of research to discover the ways in which essential oils effect our emotions and moods. We know that they can be absorbed into the skin through massage or warm baths, and we know they have effects on our physical bodies as well.  We can see and feel these changes in ourselves. They most certainly do have real effects and not just those of a placebo.  Eventually, the scientific research will catch up to what people have learned over the centuries.

Meanwhile, you can use aromatherapy in your own home.  Do your own experiments and you will discover that they can help keep your family calm and living in harmony even under stressful daily schedules.

Try these aromatherapy harmony concepts to reduce the affects of family stress. The easiest way to use the calming anti-stress essential oils of Bergamot, Spikenard, Jasmine, Orange, Apple, Camphor and Comfrey is by placing cotton wool balls with a few drops of any in the air conditioner and/or heat vents of each room. This will fill the air with soothing aromas that will help bring harmony to your household.

Calming essential oils can be used in every room of the house. A few drops of lavender or citrus can be added to carrier oil and used in nightly baths as well.

You can also use candles that contain essential oils.  These can be burned as needed during particularly stressful times to help the busy family members stay calm, focused and in harmony with one another.

Use aromatherapy to help restore peace and harmony to your household! It’s a family stress reliever.
